핀란드는 어떤 전통을 가진 나라인지 궁금하다.

국가의 전통은 기후와 밀접한 관계가 있다고 생각한다. 겨울이 길고, 겨울밤은 더욱 긴 핀란드의 경우 집 안에서 보내는 시간이 많다 보니, 손으로 무언가를 만드는 전통이 오래전부터 발달했다. 여자들은 옷을 짓고, 남자들은 땔감을 준비하거나 나무로 그릇을 만들어왔다. 핀란드 공예의 전통은 기후의 특성 때문에 만들어졌다고 볼 수 있다. 그런 점에서 한국과 핀란드는 ‘겨울’이란 공통점으로 빚어진 동질성 강한 문화와 전통을 가졌다고 할 수 있다.

 

What are Finland’s traditions?

Finland is known for its long winter days and longer winter nights; therefore, we spent a lot of time indoors. We have a long tradition of making things by hands. Women made clothes, while men prepared firewood or made wooden vessels. The traditional Finnish crafts have been mainly attributed to its climate. In this respect, the culture and tradition of Korea and Finland have a lot in common, thus owing to the homogenous character of the winter season.

 

핀란드인의 눈에 비친 한국의 전통은 어떤 모습인가?

한마디로 설명하기엔 너무 광범위한 주제이지만, 가장 인상 깊은 한국의 전통문화는 ‘발효’였다. 된장, 고추장, 김치 같은 발효 음식을 맛본건 놀라운 경험이었다. 신기한 건 과학 지식이 낮았던 시절, 어떻게 그런 훌륭한 음식문화를 만들어내고 전승했는가 하는 거였다. 외모가 아빠와 비슷한 큰딸이 동치미와 떡을 좋아하는 걸 보면서, ‘입맛의 DNA’가 가진 힘에 놀랐다. 김치 같은 발효식품을 항아리에 넣어 숙성시키는 과정은 마치 아이를 키우는 일과 같다고 생각한다. 발효 음식이 그리 발달하지 않은 핀란드에서 자란 나에게는 이런 모습이 아주 아름답게 보였다. ‘빨리빨리 문화’로 유명한 한국인이 숙성의 오랜 기다림이 필요한 발효라는 전통을 어떻게 가지게 되었는지 무척 궁금하다. 대조적인 이미지의 문화가 공존한다는 게 흥미롭다.

 

What is the impression of the Finnish people on the traditions of Korea?

It is such a broad and difficult topic; however, the most impressive Korean tradition is the fermentation process. It was an amazing experience to taste fermented food such as doenjang, gochujang, and kimchi. What was amazing to me was how they created and handed down such a magnificent food culture even with limited scientific knowledge. I was surprised by the power of DNA on the sense of taste, as evidenced by my eldest daughter. She resembles her father, and they both love dongchimi and rice cakes. I think the process of curing fermented food, such as kimchi in jars, is similar to raising kids. I was raised in Finland, where there is not much fermented food, and it looked very beautiful. I am very interested in learning how the Korean people have developed the tradition of fermentation, which requires a long time of waiting, when they are rather renowned for being a fast culture. It is fascinating to see that these contrasting images of culture do coexist.

많은 장르 중에서 왜 유독 유리공예를 하게 되었고, 유리라는 소재의 매력은 무엇인가?

우연이었다고 말해야 솔직한 답변이 될 것이다. 어려서부터 흙 만지는 걸 좋아해서 도자기를 전공하게 되었는데, 학과에서 유리공예도 함께 배우다 보니, 유리와 만나게 되었다. 도자기와 유리는 불을 통해 완성된다는 점에서 유사하다. 그런데 도자기는 내 손끝에서 디자인이 완성되는 반면에, 뜨거운 유리는 손을 댈 수 없는 대상이다. 따라서 훨씬 큰 도전을 요구한다. 만질 수 없는 소재로 원하는 모양을 만들어가는 즐거움이 있다. 또 유리는 뜨거웠을 때는 유연하지만 차갑게 식으면 변형이 이뤄지지 않는다는 큰 차이점이 있다. 그런 점에 무한한 매력을 느낀다.

 

Why did you choose glass craft among the many genres of art?

I majored in porcelain craft because I have always loved playing with clay, and I was introduced to the use of glass as a medium due to it being a part of the program. Porcelain and glass are similar in that the finishing process is completed through fire. I can design porcelain with my fingertips; however, the hot glass is impossible to lay my hands on. It demands a greater challenge. There is pleasure in molding something into a desired form without touching it. Another difference is that glass is soft when hot, but becomes hard when it has cooled. That is the reason why it is infinitely attractive.

 

한국에서의 삶을 선물한 남편과는 어떻게 만났나?

나와 마찬가지로 도예와 유리공예를 전공한 남편은 아주 호기심이 많은 사람이다. 남편은 체코에서 건축과 사진 등 다양한 장르를 섭렵하다 핀란드로 유학 왔고, 같은 대학에서 만났다. 함께 작업을 하는 지금, 그는 뛰어난 조력자이자 동지다. 서로의 모든 것을 잘 알기 때문에 작품에도 긍정적 영향을 준다. 특히 남편은 무슨 일이든 나보다 조금씩 더 잘한다. 그런 남편에게서 많은 도움을 받는 게 사실이다. 내 실력이 더디게 향상된다는 점은 단점이라고 말할 수 있다.(웃음)

 

How did you meet your husband? How was he able to convince you to live with him in Korea?

I met my husband in college, where he also majored in porcelain and glass craft. He is a very curious man. He studied Architecture, Photography, and many other genres before coming to Finland. He is a great assistant and companion whenever we are working together. We know everything about each other, so we are able to exchange positive influences. He is slightly better than me at everything, and that is why he helps me a lot. The drawback is that I was not able to show rapid improvement (laughs).

예술 작품에는 어떤 형태로든 그 작품이 만들어진 공간의 특성이 묻어나기 마련이다. 한국이란 공간적 배경이 당신의 작품에 어떤 영향을 끼쳤는가?

핀란드에서는 학생 신분이었기 때문에 딱히 작품활동을 했다고 할 수 없다. 따라서 내 모든 작품의 배경은 한국에 국한돼 있어, 딱히 공간이 주는 영향을 크게 느낀 적은 없다. 또 변화를 느끼기엔 작가로 활동한 시간이 그리 길지 않다. 다만 컵을 예로 들자면, 얇고 화려한 디자인의 컵은 시장에 많기 때문에 투박하지만 무게감이 충분한 컵을 만들겠다는 초기의 생각은 여전하다. 하지만 파스텔 톤의 색깔을 가미한다든지, 불투명한 작품 또는 소다를 이용해 작은 기포가 생기는 작품을 만드는 시도 등은 다양하게 해왔다. 최근에는 그런 시도가 배제된 초기의 단순한 작품으로 되돌아가고 있다는 점도 변화라면 변화일 것이다.

 

How has the spatial background of Korea affected your work?

Korea has become the only location for my artworks, and I was not fully aware of the importance of space. In addition, I have only been active as an artist for a short period of time, so I was unable to feel any change. Taking the cups as an example, I still want to create coarse and heavy cups as there are many thin and colorful cups available in the market. I have made various attempts, such as adding pastel colors, making opaque glasses, or using soda, in order to create small bubbles in the glass. I am trying to go back to my earlier work without any of those attempts. I guess you could call that a change.

설화수의 광고에 당신의 유리항아리가 등장한 바 있다. 어떤 느낌이었나?

설화수와 첫 미팅을 진행할 때, 한국의 전통 오브제를 광고에 활용하는 방식이 굉장히 흥미로웠다. 그래서 광고에 들어가는 작품의 작업을 할 때도 한국의 항아리가 가진 지극히 아름다운 선을 최대한 살리려는 노력에 힘썼다. 특히 작업을 하면서 내가 처음 한국 문화에 반해서 지금까지 작품활동을 계속하고 있는 것과 마찬가지로, 한국의 전통을 현대적으로 해석하여 아름답게 알리려는 설화수의 노력과 열정에 감명받았다. 이런 생각 때문인지, 예상했던 것 보다 훨씬 아름다운 유리항아리가 탄생했다 (웃음)

 

Your glass jar has been featured in a Sulwhasoo advertisement.How did you feel?

When I first met with Sulwhasoo, I found the manner in which they used the traditional objects of Korea for advertising very interesting. Therefore, I tried hard to capture as much of the extremely beautiful line of Korean jars as I could while working on the piece for the advertisement. As captivated as I was by Korean culture in the first place, I was just as touched by Sulwhasoo’s endeavors and passion to interpret Korean tradition in a modern way and present it beautifully. For this reason, I was able to create a glass jar that is more beautiful than I had thought it would be (laughs).

 

외국인 작가로서 한국에 살면서 가장 힘든 점은 무엇인가? 또 앞으로의 계획이 있다면?

이 두 가지 질문에 대한 답은 하나로 묶여 있다. 부모이기 때문에 늘 아이들의 행복한 미래에 대한 고민이 앞선다. 두 딸이 한국 생활에 아주 잘 적응하고 있지만, 앞으로도 그럴 것인지에 대한 확신은 없다. 아마 이건 한국에서 생활하는 모든 외국인 작가들의 공통된 고민일 것이다. 따라서 앞으로의 구체적인 계획을 말하기는 어렵다. 뜨거운 가마 앞에서 첫 만남 이후 그래왔던 것처럼, 늘 큰 힘이 되는 남편과 함께 우리가 생각하는 최선의 작품을 만들기 위해 많은 시간을 보낼 것은 분명하다.

 

What is your most challenging experience as a foreign artist living in Korea? What are your plans for the future?

The answers to these questions are tied into one. As a parent, I am always concerned about the happiness and future of my kids. My two daughters are adjusting to their lives in Korea very well, but I am not sure how they would do in the future. What I can say for sure is that my husband and I will do our best to create what seems best to us, just as we have always done since we first met in front of a hot kiln.
